Online Nursing (BSN) Program - Five common myths and the facts:

Online education is growing as an increasingly popular option as well as solution across all fields of study, including nursing (RN to BSN) for busy students working within the field. Earning your BSN eventually is the smartest thing you can do for your nursing career. According to Nurse Journal (http://nursejournal.org ), The RN with an associate’s degree will earn a median of $39,100 per year and a BSN holder will earn more than $69,000 per year. Having a BSN (Bachelor’s in Nursing) degree is a requirement to start most graduate nursing programs. Three of the highest paying (median pay of $104,740 per year) nursing jobs – nurse practitioner, nurse midwife, nurse anesthetist require you to have a master’s degree as an entry level education (source: www.bls.gov/ooh) Occupational Outlook Handbook of Department of labor).

While studying for and obtaining a degree online has become more common nowadays, there are still a number of myths that continue to confuse students to make the right choice. The objective of this blog is to debunk these myths, to clear the confusion of students, discover the facts and help them to make the right choice.

Myth #1: BSN degree obtained online are not accredited and different from campus based degrees.

The truth:

A BSN that is earned online from a university that is regionally accredited (http://www.chea.org/ ) and a BSN program that is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (http://www.aacn.nche.edu/ccne-accreditation ) is equivalent to the degree earned through the same campus based program. Credit transfers from an online program should not be any different; before starting an online program, prospective student needs to thoroughly research an online BSN program’s accreditation. Before choosing any online BSN program, RN should learn about the program’s accreditation, its graduate success rate and its length of time in awarding degrees.

Myth #2: Employers will not recognize my online degree.

The truth:

Employers care the most about the accreditation of the program which meets the education requirement from Human Resource (HR) department. Secondly, hiring committee will verify if the potential candidate possess the right skills to perform job duties. As long as  online school is accredited and you learned the right skills necessary to do the job, that’s all you need to impress any employer.

Myth #3: Classroom education is better learning experience than online education.

The truth:

The initiative on the Future of Nursing , sponsored by Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Institute of Medicine , believes that, “Online education CREATES FLEXIBILITY AND PROVIDES AN ADDITIONAL SKILL SET TO STUDENTS WHO WILL USE TECHNOLOGY INTO THE FUTURE T RETRIEVE AND MANAGE INFORMATION.”

Myth 4#: Students in online needs to be good in computers.

The truth:

Students in online BSN program do not need to have advanced computer. Skills that are important for online students are familiar with internet, word, excel, PowerPoint, typing skills will obviously help in discussions. Most schools used their own learning management system to manage online program, these programs offer guidance and also help-desk support if student encounter any difficulty.

Myth #5: I won’t get to interact with patients or medical professionals.

The truth:

Nearly all nursing programs come with a clinical portion. This is the hands-on part of the process, which also applies to nursing students attending an online school. There is plenty of opportunity to learn working alongside with physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, nurse practitioners and nurses.
